Next CPC Committee Meeting:

Members of the Cooperation with the Professional Community Committee (CPC) provide information about Alcoholics Anonymous to those who have contact with alcoholics through their profession. These professionals include health care professionals, educators, members of the clergy, lawyers, social workers, union leaders, and industrial managers, as well as those working in the field of alcoholism. Information is provided about where Alcoholics Anonymous is, what we are, what we do, and what we cannot do. To do this, we:

  • Arrange for and provide staffing and literature for exhibits at professional meetings in the Southeastern New York Area.
  • Respond to requests for speakers from Area professional groups, organizations and programs.
  • Conduct presentations at Area events to explain CPC 12-Step work to AA members to encourage involvement and participation in carrying AA’s message.
  • Work with the General Service Office to provide staff for national events of professional organizations held in the Area.
  • Cooperate with Area local Intergroups in responding to CPC requests.

Currently, we are also cooperating with a program of the New York affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and funded by The Smithers Foundation that trains physicians to diagnose, treat and case manage alcoholics and other addicted patients. The program, the Physician’s Alcoholism and Addiction Training program, pairs an AA member with a resident physician from an area teaching hospital for three consecutive evenings to help the physician understand the progressive nature of alcoholism and the AA recovery program. If you are an AA member interested in participating, it is suggested that you have:

  • Three years of continuous sobriety
  • Familiarity with the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Familiarity with the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions
  • A desire to share AA experience
  • Are available for the time required
